Sunwoda Electric Vehicle Battery achieves a 9-minute full LFP charge, a breakthrough poised to reshape EV adoption globally
17 Jun 2026

Sunwoda Electric Vehicle Battery said on 15 June 2026 that it had demonstrated a full charge of a lithium iron phosphate battery in approximately nine minutes, a claim that, if replicated at scale, would mark a significant departure from prevailing fast-charge benchmarks of 30 to 60 minutes.
LFP chemistry has long attracted buyers for its safety profile and longer cycle life. Charging speed has been its persistent weakness relative to rival formulations. Sunwoda's announcement suggests that gap may be narrowing faster than the industry had anticipated.
The practical consequences are considerable. Fleet operators calculating total cost of ownership weigh vehicle downtime heavily alongside purchase price and energy costs. A charge window of under ten minutes compresses that downtime substantially, altering procurement decisions for logistics companies, taxi platforms, and urban transit agencies.
For private drivers, the comparison to a petrol fill-up becomes harder to dismiss. Surveys of prospective EV buyers have consistently ranked charging time among the leading reasons for hesitation. A nine-minute window does not eliminate that concern, but it reduces it materially.
Grid demand remains an open question. Ultra-fast charging draws large bursts of power, placing pressure on local infrastructure, and utilities have moved cautiously on enabling high-density charging networks in many markets. Battery management software and demand-smoothing technology are advancing alongside cell chemistry, though deployment at scale will test both.
Sunwoda's announcement arrives as Asia Pacific governments and manufacturers press to consolidate their position across the battery supply chain, from raw materials through to finished cells. The timing adds competitive weight to that effort, with Western and European rivals still working to close gaps in LFP production capacity.
Mass production timelines and commercial pricing have not been disclosed.
