CATL has unveiled the Shenxing Pro, a lithium iron phosphate battery it says can maintain high-voltage output for more than one hour after thermal runaway, without producing fire or smoke. The Chinese battery maker announced the cell in September 2025, positioning it as the first LFP unit to meet that threshold.

Thermal runaway, a chain reaction of heat and pressure that can cause a battery to catch fire, has been among the most closely watched failure modes in electric vehicles. Regulators in Europe and North America have moved to tighten safety certification requirements for EVs in recent years, and the Shenxing Pro appears designed with those frameworks in view.

On range, the cell is rated at 758 kilometres per charge under WLTP testing conditions, the standard used in European markets. Total lifespan is set at one million kilometres, with CATL recording only 9 per cent capacity loss after 200,000 kilometres of use.

Those figures carry weight for commercial fleet operators. Battery replacement cycles determine a significant portion of total vehicle ownership costs, and a cell that retains most of its capacity past 200,000 kilometres reduces that burden substantially.

LFP chemistry has historically traded lower energy density, and therefore shorter range, for cost advantages over nickel-based alternatives. The Shenxing Pro's rated range challenges that trade-off directly, giving automakers sourcing next-generation cells an option that previously did not exist in the LFP segment.

Adoption patterns across price-sensitive markets, where LFP batteries already hold a dominant share on cost grounds, may shift if the performance gap with nickel-based cells continues to narrow. Whether regulators formally recognise the Shenxing Pro's post-runaway performance as meeting new safety thresholds remains an open question.
